We’re excited to embark on a new chapter in behavioral health with the launch of our Psychiatry Residency Program. We recognize the critical importance of mental health and the ongoing national shortage of psychiatrists. Our program is designed to meet these needs right here in our community.
About Our Psychiatry Residency Program
Our four-year residency program will welcome six residents each year, eventually growing to a total of 24 psychiatry residents. Core clinical rotations will take place at WellSpan York Hospital and surrounding ambulatory facilities, with more rotations in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. This comprehensive training will provide residents with a range of clinical experience, preparing them to serve diverse populations and settings.
Inspired by our team’s passion for patient care, Dr. Arya Soman joined WellSpan to help build the new program.
WellSpan’s values and patient and community-centered focus strongly resonated with my professional and personal values. I was impressed by the breadth and depth of clinical services the behavioral health service line provides.
What Sets Us Apart
Comprehensive Continuum of Care: Our care model serves both adult and pediatric populations across rural, suburban and urban settings.
Diverse Clinical Experiences: Residents will gain exposure to an array of levels of care and clinical presentations, preparing them to work in diverse environments after graduation.
Unique Training Opportunities: Training will include rotations at a Level 1 trauma center, a full-fledged behavioral health campus and a center specialized in addressing the behavioral health needs of autistic individuals and developmental disabilities.
Elective Opportunities: Elective opportunities will be available as early as the second year, allowing residents to explore and develop their areas of interest.
A Team of Dedication and Expertise
Our program is supported by dedicated leaders in Behavioral Health and Academic Affairs/Graduate Medical Education. We also collaborate with the York Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program and WellSpan’s neurology service line to make sure residents receive strong foundational clinical knowledge and skills in general medicine and neurology.
“Residents will receive excellent clinical training while they’re here. As they develop their professional identities, the goal is for their experiences to help them understand and function as members and leaders of interprofessional teams across different models of care,” Dr. Soman said. “We want them to graduate with an understanding of the health care landscape and ways in which they can best advocate for their patients, their communities and themselves.”
Preparing for Residents
We’re preparing for our inaugural class of residents, who’ll join us in the summer of 2025. Our clinical staff is well-prepared. We’ve held faculty development sessions and members of our team have participated in a national quality improvement and patient safety curriculum design course. We communicate regularly with all team members and leadership, ensuring a smooth transition and a supportive environment for incoming residents.
Dr. Soman is grateful to lead an incredibly dedicated, skilled and caring residency program leadership team. The core psychiatry faculty have rich clinical experience and various areas of interest. Team members from other behavioral health professions are also eager to welcome and teach our residents.

Q:How will residents benefit from our program?
A:
Given that psychiatry is a discipline that actively integrates considerations across biological, psychological, social and spiritual domains, I believe that residents will gain a very rich training experience with a collaborative and supportive group of interdisciplinary and interprofessional team members here at WellSpan.
Q:What do you envision as a successful residency?
A:
My hope is for residents to gain experience while maintaining their own well-being, to find or cultivate their passions inside and outside of work and to always stay curious. General residency may only be for four years, but lifelong learning is forever!

We aspire to have our residents graduate with the belief that WellSpan Health is an excellent place to learn, work and live, both during and after their residency. Join us in this exciting new chapter of behavioral health and help us make a meaningful impact in the lives of our patients and communities.
