Krista Hunt loves helping people. You could say it’s in her blood. Her grandmother and aunt had long careers as nurses, which inspired Krista to work at WellSpan Family Medicine – Bannister Street.

Krista was a front office assistant at the office, but knew she wanted more interaction with patients. She found Wellspan’s Medical Assistant Training Program to be the perfect opportunity to advance her career. 

In collaboration with the Harrisburg Area Community College, the program is offered exclusively to our team members at zero cost. Kirsta is one of 86 students to go through the program at WellSpan.

“If the cost of everything wasn’t covered, I don’t think I would have been able to do this. I know many people can’t take on the financial responsibility to go back to school, so I’m very thankful.”

Krista says her office manager, Evelyn Negron, encouraged her to apply. “She supported me throughout the entire program and always checked in on me,” says Krista. “It really meant a lot.”

Evelyn says Krista is thriving in her new role.

“She has always been such a great asset to our team,” Evelyn says.

“Krista is a go-getter and always wants to apply herself. When I saw that this program was being offered to team members, I knew that she would be perfect for the role. She’s proving me right.”

Evelyn thinks the training program is a chance for team members to grow and move up. It shows that WellSpan wants to help team members and cares about their future.

“It’s special to know that if someone is feeling bad when they come into our office, we can try to help them feel better when they leave,” Krista says.

After having such a positive experience with the training program, Krista encouraged her sister-in-law to apply as well and recently watched her graduate. While the program requires a lot of work and dedication, Krista encourages team members to take the leap and go for it.

“It was such a rewarding experience,” she says.
