Are you a student nurse in your final year of your nursing school journey to become an RN?

Explore an incredible opportunity that could jumpstart your nursing career as a nurse extern.

What is a Nurse Extern Program?

A nurse extern program is a clinical program that allows nursing students to work alongside registered nurses (RNs) in an acute care hospital. Not like a clinical rotation, the extern program offers paid, hands-on experience over nine weeks.

Why Should You Consider a Nurse Extern Program?

  1. Gain real-world experience: Extern programs provide an invaluable, hands-on experience. You'll work with real patients, under the supervision of RNs, and gain a deeper understanding of what nursing is truly like.

  2. Build your resume: Having an externship under your belt can make your resume stand out. It shows potential employers that you have practical experience and are committed to your career.

  3. Networking opportunities: Extern programs allow you to meet and work with professionals in your field. These connections can lead to future job opportunities and mentorships.

  4. Earn while you learn: Get paid while you learn.

What to Expect from a Nurse Extern Program

You'll work similar shifts to ‌RNs, which could include days, evenings or night shifts. Here are some tasks you might be responsible for:

  • Assisting with patient care, such as taking vital signs, helping with meals or transporting patients.

  • Performs certain procedures if they show they can do them well. These include catheterization, insertion of an NG tube and wound care.

  • Collaborating with the health care team, including RNs, doctors and other health care professionals.

How to Make the Most of Your Nurse Extern Program

  • Ask questions: Don't be afraid to ask questions. This is a learning opportunity, and your supervisors expect you to be curious.

  • Be proactive: Show initiative by volunteering to help and taking on new tasks when you can.

  • Reflect: Take time to reflect on what you've learned each day. This will help you grow both personally and professionally.
