Hear from Christian Hillegas, Psychology Resident

Christian started with WellSpan as a Psych Intern in 2024 where he was partnered with his mentor, Dr. Anastasia Teng throughout the program. Upon completion of his internship, he has since taken on the role of a Psych resident with WellSpan. Both Christian and Dr. Teng provided feedback and insight on their experiences during the internship and what it was like to be a mentor and mentee during the program.

Q:What experiences during your internship helped to shape/mold your career?

A:

Having the opportunity to learn from my excellent supervisor team at my internship and work with them directly to further develop skills as a clinician ultimately helped to shape me into my career. More specifically, observing their personal approach to clinical work, therapy, and assessment allowed me to gain a sense of professionalism that has continued to stick with me. The high level of mentorship at my internship has since been the most impactful aspect of my experience.

Q:What were your main goals to gain from the internship?

A:

My main goals to gain from the internship were to sharpen my skills in direct individual treatment, psychological assessment, and to develop a deeper sense of comfort working in a larger multidisciplinary system. My hope was to leave the internship with confidence and competency for independent practice.

Q:What advice would you give to others wanting to follow the same path?

A:

My advice would be to lean into the process of supervision and take a strong interest in the experiences of supervisors. Their experience is invaluable, and developing a relationship with a mentor can have everlasting effects on how you evolve as a professional.

Q:What does it mean to you to be a mentor/leader to those going through the internship?

A:

As a former Philhaven intern myself, I have had the privilege of learning from great psychologists who were supportive, caring and encouraging. As a mentor/leader, I aspire to be that for others. I hope to be supportive as doctoral interns navigate their internship year.

Q:Share some details from your experiences as a mentor/leader to Christian Hillegas.

A:

Supervising Christian was easy. He was and continues to be open to feedback, demonstrates flexibility, and is willing to learn.  Whether its supervising Christian or other interns, I learn a great deal and feel challenged clinically in the process.

Q:Do you have any encouraging words/advice for those wanting to pursue your footsteps or those entering an internship?

A:

One of the other best parts of being a supervisor is being part of a team that is committed to learning, teaching, and modeling professionalism in our field. For interns, I would say: take the time and learn new things, expand on existing skills and make professional connections.
