Heart and vascular physician teams play a crucial role in improving the health and well-being of our local communities. They not only provide specialized care for cardiovascular conditions but also educate our communities on preventive measures and healthy lifestyles.

Dr. Peter Barclay is a highly skilled and compassionate cardiologist dedicated to providing exceptional care to his patients. With years of experience and a deep commitment to advancing cardiovascular health, he’s a trusted leader in the field.

His journey with us began in the late 1990s when he joined Brockie Internal Medicine as an internist and later as a hospitalist. Cardiology has always been his favorite specialty, and he pursued a cardiology fellowship at Penn State in 2008. He returned to WellSpan as a cardiologist in 2011, and “it’s been a wonderful place to work ever since."

I truly enjoy the York area, where my wife is a lifelong resident. We have raised our children here and have deep roots in the community,” he said. “The hospital has always been fully supportive of the doctors and staff, and we have a fantastic patient base. Taking care of the cardiac concerns of our patients here in York and across the region is genuinely rewarding and enjoyable.

  • Plumbers: These are the doctors who take care of our coronary arteries and other “pipes” in the heart.

  • Electricians: These specialists handle cardiac electrical issues and implant devices to maintain a stable heart rhythm.

  • General contractors: Noninvasive cardiologists act as the general contractors of cardiology. “We manage general cardiology issues and often refer patients to the plumbers and electricians for more specialized care. Our daily responsibilities include reading EKGs, echocardiograms and nuclear stress tests. We also have specialized imaging cardiologists who interpret advanced studies like cardiac MRIs and CT scans, supporting our invasive cardiologists during procedures.”

WellSpan Cardiology stands out due to its commitment to excellence and community engagement.

The group was initially formed in the late 1960s by two cardiologists, and Dr. Nicholson, who joined in the early 1970s, remains with us today. Dr. Nicholson played a crucial role in establishing the high standards of practice that continue to this day.

In addition to clinical excellence, WellSpan Cardiology is known for its unique programs and initiatives that promote heart health and provide practical resources to the community.

Samantha Stover, heart health program coordinator, along with the cardiology team, actively attend and host events to connect with people of all ages to promote heart health.

The team also collaborates with the American Heart Association and other service lines to expand our outreach and impact. These include:

  • Hands-only CPR education: Teaching the community life-saving skills.

  • Blood Pressure Loaner Program: Providing blood pressure monitors to at-risk individuals.

  • Free public lectures and dinners during Heart Month: Educating the public about heart health and offering practical advice.

  • Walk and Talk with a WellSpan Doc: Encouraging physical activity and providing health consultations.

These efforts are part of our broader mission to proactively address heart disease, raise awareness and support at-risk populations. We’re committed to providing the best care for our patients and making a positive impact in the community.

WellSpan Cardiology stands out because of our doctors, advanced practice providers (APPs) and staff. We have been able to recruit and retain leading doctors in all areas of cardiology. We are extremely fortunate to have a group that’s very supportive of each other as well. Everyone is in it together as a team to provide the best care for our patients.
